The Lagos State Government has announced the closure and traffic diversion plans for emergency repairs on the Independence/Mekwen Bridge (inbound Marina/CMS route).

The repairs are set to begin on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, and continue until Monday, May 26, 2025.

Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the State Commissioner for Transportation, made the announcement on Sunday.

He explained that the section of the road from the National Open University of Nigeria through Bonny Camp Bridge to the Independence Bridge would be closed to traffic during the repairs.

Additionally, the Bonny Camp Underpass Bridge service lane inbound the Independence Bridge will also be closed.

However, the service lane from Ahmadu Bello Way to Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue will remain open for motorists.

To manage the disruption, alternative routes have been provided for commuters:

– From Ahmadu Bello Way to Victoria Island: Drivers should take Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue inbound to Akin Adesola Street, continue to Falomo Roundabout, and then use Obafemi Awolowo Road to access Ring Road.

– From Ahmadu Bello Way to 3rd Mainland Bridge : Motorists should take Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, then proceed via Akin Adesola Street to Alfred Rewane Road, Osborne Road, and finally connect to Ring Road.

– From Ahmadu Bello Way to Inner Marina/CMS : Vehicles will be diverted through Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue to Akin Adesola Street, then connect to Falomo Roundabout and Obafemi Awolowo Road. From there, drivers can access J.K. Randle Road or King George V Road.

– From Inner Marina/CMS to Ahmadu Bello Way: Traffic heading to Ahmadu Bello Way from Inner Marina/CMS will proceed without disruption.

The Commissioner assured the public that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority would be on hand to regulate traffic during the repairs.

He urged motorists to remain patient as the partial closure is a necessary part of the ongoing rehabilitation works on the road sections, managed by the Federal Ministry of Works and the Office of the Federal Controller in Lagos.
