Wellesley Bolt, father of legendary sprinter Usain Bolt, has passed away at the age of 68 after battling a long illness.

The sad event occurred on Monday in Jamaica, as reported by local media.

Despite maintaining a low profile, Wellesley played a key role in shaping Usain Bolt’s remarkable career. Alongside his wife, Jennifer, he ran a grocery store while supporting his son’s journey to becoming an eight-time Olympic gold medallist and one of the greatest sprinters in history.

Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, led the tributes, describing Wellesley as a “strong, quiet force” behind his son’s global success. In a heartfelt message, he extended his condolences to the Bolt family, emphasizing Wellesley’s impact on Usain’s legacy, which continues to inspire millions worldwide.

Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment, and Sport, Olivia Grange also expressed her sympathies, recognizing Wellesley as a devoted father. “It is going to be a difficult time, but I encourage them to be comforted by the memory of a very good father,” she said.

Throughout Usain Bolt’s career, Wellesley was a familiar presence in the stands, cheering his son to victory on the world’s biggest stages. The bond between father and son was evident, with Usain often crediting his family for their unwavering support.

Wellesley Bolt is survived by his wife Jennifer and three children—Usain, Sadiki, and Christine Bolt-Hylton. Usain has yet to make a public statement on his father’s passing.
