In a bold move that redefines digital banking in Nigeria, Sterling Bank has scrapped payment of transfer fees on all local online transactions for its customers.

This groundbreaking decision places Sterling Bank at the forefront of customer-focused banking in the country.

The announcement, made on April 1, initially provoked a debate, with many dismissing it as an April Fools’ Day stunt. However, Sterling Bank has since affirmed that the policy is genuine and effective immediately. This makes Sterling the first major bank in Nigeria to take a definitive stance against the long-standing practice of charging customers for digital transfers.

Obinna Ukachukwu, Growth Executive leading the Consumer and Business Banking Directorate, emphasized that the initiative aligns with Sterling’s core values. “We believe access to your own money shouldn’t come with a penalty,” he said. “This is more than a financial decision; it reflects our commitment to making banking fair, inclusive, and truly customer focused.”

Ukachukwu further highlighted the bank’s vision, stating, “We’re not yet the biggest bank in Nigeria, but we’ve been the boldest. Sterling fearlessly believes in the future of Nigeria, and this is us backing Nigerians with more than words.”

Under the new policy, Sterling customers will no longer incur transfer fees for transactions made via the bank’s mobile app. This development is expected to bring significant financial relief, particularly for individuals and small business owners who rely on frequent digital transactions.

Sterling Bank’s commitment to customer-first banking is not new. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the bank provided supplementary payments to healthcare workers in public hospitals, a move that distinguished it as a socially responsible institution. This latest initiative reinforces its reputation for prioritizing customer welfare and ethical banking.

The policy shift has sparked widespread approval, with many Nigerians taking to social media to praise the bank’s initiative. Online platforms, including WhatsApp Nigeria, have been abuzz with discussions. One viral message from a prayer group read, “Please my good people, this is not a joke!!! Sterling Bank has just shocked Nigeria today o!! My neighbour Justina just transferred N100k and no charges!!! God bless Sterling Bank!!”

The overwhelming public response has also placed pressure on other banks to consider similar changes. Many financial analysts predict that competitors will be forced to reevaluate their fee structures to remain competitive in an increasingly digital banking landscape.

Sterling Bank’s zero-fee policy forms part of a broader strategy to enhance customer experience and promote transparent, ethical banking. By eliminating transfer fees, the bank has not only eased financial burdens but also set a new standard for the Nigerian banking industry.

As customers celebrate the move, industry watchers remain keen to see how other financial institutions will respond. For now, Sterling Bank stands out as a leader in championing customer-friendly banking reforms in Nigeria.
