The Federal High Court  in Abuja issued a significant ruling on Friday, restraining Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and other parties from granting media interviews on the ongoing lawsuit.

The case, filed by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, seeks to prevent the Senate from investigating her. Justice Binta Nyako, who is now overseeing the case, made the order during the hearing of the suit.

Justice Nyako directed that, until the case is fully heard and determined, no party or legal counsel involved in the matter should engage with the media.

This includes refraining from giving interviews, posting on social media, or discussing the subject matter in any public forum. The judge’s instructions also encompassed a complete media blockade, which extends to television interviews and press conferences.

“There should be no press interviews by all parties and counsel regarding the subject matter of this case. No streaming or social media posts related to this case should be made. There should be no TV interviews as it pertains to this matter,” Justice Nyako stated. The ruling effectively curbs any public commentary on the case while it remains under judicial review.

The case originally came under the purview of Justice Obiora Egwuatu, but on Thursday, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, reassigned the matter to Justice Nyako.

This change followed Justice Egwuatu’s withdrawal from the case, which was prompted by allegations of bias reportedly made by Senate President Akpabio, who is the third defendant in the lawsuit.

The issue of bias, coupled with the political sensitivity surrounding the case, led to the reassignment to ensure impartiality in the judicial process. As a result, the proceedings will now move forward under Justice Nyako’s oversight.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, a suspended member of the Senate, filed the suit to stop the Senate from investigating her over alleged misconduct. The ongoing legal battle has drawn considerable attention due to its implications for the Senate’s powers and the rights of individual lawmakers under investigation.

The court’s decision to prohibit public discussions highlights the seriousness with which it views the case and its potential consequences for all involved parties.

With the media ban now in place, the court has emphasized the need for judicial discretion and restraint in addressing sensitive legal matters.

The outcome of this case is expected to have broader implications for the relationship between the legislative branch and the judiciary, as well as the transparency of legal processes involving public officials.

The case is expected to continue under Justice Nyako’s supervision, and all parties will be required to respect the court’s media restrictions as the matter progresses through the judicial system.
