Eight candidates seeking employment at the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission, have been disqualified  after they test positive for banned substances.

The affected individuals are among the 1,800 shortlisted applicants undergoing the final stage of screening for teaching jobs under Kwara State TESCOM.

In a statement issued on Monday, TESCOM Press Secretary Sam Onile confirms that the drug test is conducted by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency with full backing from Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

TESCOM Chairman Bello Taoheed Abubakar discloses that the candidates test positive for substances including tramadol, marijuana, benzodiazepine, cotinine, and amphetamine—all classified as harmful and prohibited.

He says the development automatically eliminates the affected individuals from the recruitment list, and they will be replaced by the next best-performing candidates from their respective local government areas.

“This is a clear demonstration of the state government’s zero-tolerance policy on drug abuse, especially in the education sector,” Abubakar says.

He adds that safeguarding children from exposure to drug users is a priority. “We have a duty of care not to expose little children to drug abuse under any circumstance,” he stresses.

Abubakar commends Governor AbdulRazaq for insisting on merit-based recruitment, describing the governor’s stance as a reflection of transparent and responsible governance.

“Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has etched his name in gold for ensuring that only competent and drug-free individuals are entrusted with teaching roles. His commitment to fairness and quality in education is clear,” the statement reads.

He also affirms that the disqualification process is not meant to embarrass anyone, but to uphold the integrity of the teaching profession and protect learners.

The TESCOM recruitment is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to raise educational standards, promote professionalism, and ensure that only qualified candidates are allowed into the classroom.

The screening process continues, with successful applicants expected to receive final placement in the coming weeks.
