Senate President Godswill Akpabio has commended the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, Mr. Christopher Maikalangu for joining the All Progressives Congress, APC, alongside many of his supporters.

Speaking through Deputy Senate President Sen. Barau Jibrin at a rally organised by the APC Federal Capital Territory chapter to welcome the defectors, Akpabio described the development as a defining moment for residents of the FCT.

He praised Maikalangu’s decision as courageous and strategic, adding that the mass defection signified the increasing strength and appeal of the APC in the nation’s capital. He further applauded the leadership of the party at the national level for their efforts in attracting new members.

“This influx of supporters marks a turning point for the FCT. The momentum we are witnessing today is a clear indication of a landslide victory in future elections,” Akpabio stated.

He called on all APC members to rally behind President Bola Tinubu’s administration and remain patient as the government addresses the nation’s multifaceted challenges.

“Before President Tinubu took office, Nigeria was grappling with numerous issues—ranging from infrastructure and security to energy. Global conflicts have also compounded our economic challenges, but the President is doing everything within his power to reposition the country,” he said.

Emphasising the need for collective effort, Akpabio reminded Nigerians that rebuilding a fractured system requires time and cooperation. “Rome wasn’t built in a day. We must show faith in this administration’s vision and work together to realise it.”

He assured Maikalangu and his supporters of equal treatment and inclusion within the APC, urging all party members to unite for the sake of national progress.

Also speaking at the event, former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, encouraged former party members who had decamped to other political platforms to return before the next general elections.

“Come 2027, there will be no vacancy in Aso Rock,” Bello declared confidently. He described the APC as the only viable political vehicle for national development and dismissed opposition parties as spectators in the coming electoral cycle.

On his part, Maikalangu attributed his defection to persistent political marginalisation and missed opportunities at the federal level. He said joining the ruling party was necessary to deliver better governance and development to the people of AMAC.

“This move is about ensuring that my people benefit from the dividends of democracy. Aligning with the APC gives us a better chance to influence development and secure federal presence in our council,” Maikalangu said.

Observers see his defection as a calculated effort to enhance AMAC’s influence and access to federal resources under the current administration.
