U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 100% tariff on all foreign-produced films imported into the United States.
The dramatic move is part of his broader push for economic protectionism and is being positioned as a step to revive the struggling American film industry.
“The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death,” Trump declared on his Truth Social platform, accusing foreign nations of luring U.S. filmmakers overseas with attractive subsidies and tax breaks. “Hollywood, and many other areas within the U.S.A., is being devastated,” he said.
Calling the exodus of film production a coordinated effort by other nations, Trump labeled it a “National Security threat” and said he had instructed the Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative to begin the process of implementing the tariffs.
“We want movies made in America, Again,” he wrote, echoing his familiar campaign slogan style.

While details of how the tariffs would be implemented remain unclear, the proposal has already raised questions within the industry.
Hollywood studios have increasingly opted for international locations to take advantage of lower production costs and tax incentives abroad. Critics argue that tariffs may increase overall costs rather than solve the issue.
In 2024, California Governor Gavin Newsom launched a multi-billion dollar initiative to make California more competitive by offering expanded tax credits to film producers—a move seen as an effort to reclaim productions from other states and countries.
Since returning to office in January, Trump has prioritized aggressive trade measures aimed at reshoring manufacturing and other industries.
This latest proposal extends that approach to the entertainment sector, a move that could reshape global film distribution if enacted.
