Controversial social media activist and commentator, Martins Otse, aka VeryDarkMan, VDM, has been released from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, days after his arrest in Abuja sparked nationwide reactions.
VDM had been held by the anti-corruption agency since Friday, following multiple petitions allegedly filed against him. According to EFCC officials, the arrest was a result of his failure to honour a series of invitations extended to him for questioning.
However, his detention quickly drew public criticism, especially from Nigerian youths who took to social media platforms demanding his immediate and unconditional release.
On Wednesday evening, activist and politician Omoyele Sowore confirmed the release in a Facebook post that simply read, “VDM Released!”
VDM, known for his bold commentaries on national issues and corruption, had used his large online platform to challenge both public and private institutions.

His arrest led to widespread speculation about the motives behind the EFCC’s action, with critics accusing the agency of silencing dissenting voices.
The EFCC, in its official response, maintained that due process was followed, noting that VDM had been repeatedly invited for questioning prior to his detention. However, they did not disclose the specific nature of the petitions filed against him.
His release has sparked renewed calls for transparency in the handling of cases involving public commentators and activists. Supporters hailed the development as a victory for freedom of expression and civil rights in Nigeria.
As of press time, VDM has yet to make a public statement, but his release has been widely celebrated online with the hashtag #FreeVDM trending on various platforms throughout the day.
