The high-profile trial of Simon Ekpa, a Nigerian-Finnish separatist leader, has officially begun in Finland, with prosecutors charging him with multiple terrorism-related offenses.

Finnish authorities allege that Ekpa used online platforms to incite violence and promote activities linked to terrorism between 2021 and 2024.

According to a statement released by Finland’s National Prosecution Authority on Friday, the charges include public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent and participation in a terrorist organization.

While the statement did not name the individual, Finnish national broadcaster YLE confirmed the accused as Simon Ekpa, who is widely known for his leadership role in a faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

Ekpa, who claims to lead the Biafra Republic Government in Exile, has been vocal in his push for the independence of Nigeria’s southeastern region — a goal that reignites memories of the 1967-70 civil war.

His online broadcasts and social media posts have long stirred controversy, drawing condemnation for allegedly encouraging unrest and violence in Nigeria.

The dual citizen of Nigeria and Finland previously served on Lahti’s local transport committee as a representative of the National Coalition Party.

He was detained in late 2024, and at the time, Finnish authorities also sought the arrest of four others suspected of financing his activities. However, the prosecution dropped charges against the co-accused due to insufficient evidence.

Ekpa has remained in custody and denies all charges. He has also been the subject of numerous fact-checks by international agencies, including AFP, over repeated instances of disinformation in his independence advocacy.

His trial marks a critical moment in both Finland’s judicial proceedings and Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to contain separatist agitation.
