The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa has disclosed that intelligence reports point to insider betrayal and targeted attacks as key factors behind the ongoing killings in Benue State. He pledged decisive military action to end the violence.

During a recent visit to Benue State, General Musa met with Governor Hyacinth Alia and described the situation as “one killing too many,” emphasizing the urgent need for a strategic overhaul in security operations.

He announced plans to meet with field commanders to reassess their tactics and strengthen collaboration with the state government and local communities.

Citing the disturbing pattern of the attacks, General Musa stated, “If you see the pattern of killings and slaughtering, it means there is an insider.” He added that intelligence findings confirmed targeted ambushes and betrayal from within.

To address the crisis, he plans to engage traditional rulers and clan leaders, urging them to promote unity and rebuild trust. Assuring the public of a robust response, Musa vowed that this would be the last such incident.

“We will take the battle to them, not wait for them to attack,” he declared, noting that the military will pursue cross-border attackers.

Calling on Nigerians to support the armed forces and encouraging youths to reject violence, the CDS affirmed the military’s resolve to end the bloodshed. “This madness must stop,” he stressed.

In response to the killings, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced plans to visit Benue State. Over 100 people were reportedly killed in recent attacks. The President, originally scheduled to visit Kaduna State, postponed that trip to Thursday, June 19, 2025, in order to personally assess the crisis in Benue.
