Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have arrested a former professional footballer, Segun George Hunkarin, and his business associate, Ntoruka Chinedu, for attempting to smuggle a consignment of cocaine into Nigeria through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

A search of his carry-on bag revealed 37 wraps of cocaine, weighing 800 grammes, hidden inside. Babafemi said investigations showed that Chinedu arrived from Turkey via an Ethiopian Airlines flight with a stopover in Addis Ababa, where he picked up the consignment from another individual before flying into Nigeria.

Further inquiries led to the arrest of his accomplice, former footballer Segun Hunkarin, who was waiting at the airport car park to receive the drugs. Hunkarin, who previously played for clubs in Brazil, was tracked and apprehended on the spot.

In his statement, Hunkarin reportedly admitted to trafficking drugs twice in the past—transporting them from Brazil to Ethiopia but claimed this was his first attempt to bring any into Nigeria.
