A former Senate President, Senator David Mark has formally resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, citing deepening internal divisions and unresolved leadership crises.

In a letter dated June 27 and addressed to the PDP Chairman in his Otukpo Ward, Benue State, Mark expressed his reasons for leaving the party.

The letter, titled “Notice of Resignation from the PDP,” partly read, “I bring warm greetings to you and members of the Peoples Democratic Party, Otukpo Ward 1, and by extension, to the entire Benue State and Nigeria. I write to formally inform you of my decision to resign my membership of the party with immediate effect.”

He reflected on his commitment over the years, stating, “You may recall that over the years, I have remained firm and deeply committed to the ideals of the PDP. Even when nearly all stakeholders departed the party following our loss in the 2015 presidential election, I pledged to remain the last man standing.”

Mark further stated that his efforts to rebuild, reconcile, and reposition the party had helped restore it to national relevance. However, he noted that recent events had weakened the PDP significantly, describing it as “a shadow of its former self,” and publicly ridiculed.

He added, “However, recent events marked by deepening divisions, persistent leadership crisis, and irreconcilable differences have reduced the party to a shadow of its former self, subjecting it to public ridicule.”

Following consultations with his family, friends, and political associates, Mark announced his decision to join the National Coalition of Political Opposition Movement in Nigeria, as part of a collective effort to rescue the nation and preserve democracy.

It was also reported that Mark, along with former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, has been appointed as interim National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively, of the soon-to-be-launched ADC coalition platform.

Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress, ADC, has appointed former Senate President David Mark as the party’s protem national chairman, while former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola will serve as the protem national secretary.

The decision was reached during a high-level meeting held Tuesday night in Abuja.

Key figures at the meeting included former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former APC National Chairman John Oyegun, former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Cross River Governor Liyel Imoke, and ex-House Speaker and former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal.

Other senior political stakeholders such as Kashim Imam also attended.

In his acceptance speech, Aregbesola emphasized the need for values-driven politics rooted in ideology and service to the public.

“It is with deep humility, a profound sense of duty, and unwavering hope for our people, nation, race, and party that I accept the appointment as the National Secretary of our great party,” he said.

“A political party is not a platform for opportunism. It is not a mere vehicle to power for the few, nor a tool for personal ambition,” he continued.

“A real political party is a living institution—built on values, guided by ideals, and accountable to the people it seeks to serve.

“Too many parties today lack ideological depth. They split and merge not over policy, but over power and personality. The people and the country are often forgotten.”
