The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has firmly rejected recent insinuations that it is plotting to derail Nigeria’s democratic process, describing such claims as irresponsible and harmful to the nation’s political stability.

The rebuttal came in response to allegations by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, who had tweeted that some opposition parties were plotting to oust the Tinubu administration before the 2027 general elections.

In a statement released in Abuja on Thursday, the ADC’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, expressed outrage at the claims, asserting that the party remains committed to peaceful, democratic engagement and lawful political competition.

“We are not soldiers, we are politicians,” Abdullahi stated. “We don’t have bullets; we only have the ballots. When the time comes, we will present our solutions and a clear alternative vision for Nigeria. The people will choose.”

He described the presidential aide’s comments as a dangerous precedent and a veiled attempt to justify future crackdowns on dissent. According to Abdullahi, Onanuga’s remarks could be part of a larger strategy to delegitimise opposition voices and intimidate critics under the guise of national security.

The ADC spokesperson reminded Nigerians that the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, itself rose to power as an opposition party and should understand the role of dissent in a vibrant democracy.

“That the APC, once a proud opposition party, now finds it strange that opposing voices exist is a troubling irony,” Abdullahi said.

He cautioned President Tinubu to rein in his media aides and avoid heating up the polity with what he described as “irresponsible and unprovoked allegations.”

“We call on all Nigerians to see through these tactics and reject attempts to paint legitimate opposition as subversion,” Abdullahi urged. “True democracy thrives on competing ideas, not on the suppression of dissent.”

The ADC emphasized that it is not interested in any anti-democratic ventures but is fully focused on offering Nigerians a credible alternative through transparent and democratic means.

“We are building a movement of ideas, people, and vision—not violence,” the statement added.

Abdullahi concluded by reiterating the ADC’s unwavering commitment to national development through nonviolent participation in the democratic process.
