South Africa is stepping up diplomatic and trade efforts in a bid to avert a looming economic setback as the United States prepares to impose sweeping 30% tariffs on South African exports.

President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed Friday that his administration has entered “intensive negotiations” with the US government in the final days before the new trade barriers are scheduled to take effect on August 7.

The potential tariffs are part of a broader economic offensive by US President Donald Trump, who has targeted nearly 70 countries in a sweeping trade protection initiative.

South Africa, despite long-standing economic ties with the US, is among the nations affected by the proposed penalties.

“We’re hoping that within the window that’s still open, we will find a way to settle this matter,” Ramaphosa said Friday. “Our task is to negotiate as strongly and as hard as we can with the United States. Our objective, really, is to save jobs.”

South Africa’s central bank governor, Lesetja Kganyago, has warned that the new tariffs could cost the country as many as 100,000 jobs.

The automotive and agricultural sectors—key components of South Africa’s export economy—are expected to suffer the most if the tariffs are enforced.

These industries are already under pressure due to high input costs and a global slowdown, and further strain could worsen the country’s 30% unemployment rate.

To counter the threat, South Africa has presented a proposal to Washington that includes importing more US liquefied natural gas and agricultural goods.

The trade ministry also confirmed that South African firms are committing to invest in American industries such as mining, metals recycling, pharmaceuticals, and agri-machinery—part of a broader effort to demonstrate reciprocal economic value to the US.

While these negotiations intensify, Ramaphosa stressed the need for export diversification, warning that over-reliance on any single trading partner poses a strategic risk. “It is too risky just to focus on one,” he stated, adding that South Africa is actively exploring new trade relationships beyond the US and China.

This is not the first time South Africa has faced trade-related pressure from the US. In 2015, a dispute over poultry imports almost led to South Africa’s suspension from the African Growth and Opportunity Act, which grants duty-free access to US markets for African countries. Though that situation was resolved, it revealed how fragile the economic relationship can be.

With just days remaining before the deadline, all eyes are on Pretoria and Washington. If no agreement is reached, the tariffs will come into effect—potentially redefining the future of South Africa’s exports and its standing in global trade.

Ramaphosa remains optimistic but realistic. “Intensive negotiations are under way,” he reiterated. “We must do everything we can to protect our economy and our people.”
