Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey appeared in a London court on Tuesday to face multiple charges of rape and sexual assault, marking a significant development in a high-profile case that has drawn widespread public and media attention.

Thomas Partey, the 32-year-old Ghanaian international and former Arsenal footballer, attended Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London to face serious allegations, including five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The charges stem from alleged incidents involving three women, reportedly occurring while Partey was still under contract with Arsenal between 2021 and 2022.

Two of the complainants allege rape, while a third accuses him of sexual assault. The police investigation began in February 2022 after an initial report was filed, but Partey’s identity remained undisclosed until charges were formally brought on July 4 just days after his Arsenal contract expired at the end of June 2025.

During the court appearance, Partey dressed in a black zip-neck jumper and holding a navy blazer did not enter a plea but was granted conditional bail. The bail terms include a ban on contacting the complainants and a requirement to inform police at least 24 hours in advance of any international travel. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 2 at the Old Bailey in London.

Partey’s lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, stated that her client “strenuously denies all allegations” and is determined to clear his name. Meanwhile, reports indicate that Partey has completed a medical with Spanish club Villarreal and is preparing to join the La Liga side, continuing his professional football career despite the ongoing legal battle.

Partey joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid in 2020 for a reported £45 million and made over 50 appearances for the club. He continued to play through parts of the police investigation and completed the 2024–25 season before his contract ended on June 30, 2025.

The Metropolitan Police and the Crown Prosecution Service disclosed that some of the charges involve repeated incidents, including multiple alleged acts of anal rape against one of the victims. Arsenal has acknowledged the case but refrained from detailed comments, citing the ongoing legal process.

The case has sparked significant public interest and raised broader concerns about how professional sports organizations handle serious criminal allegations involving players. Advocates for victims’ rights and legal experts have pointed to the need for transparency and accountability in such cases.

As the legal proceedings unfold, Thomas Partey remains innocent until proven guilty. The upcoming hearing in September will be a pivotal moment in what promises to be one of the most closely followed trials involving a footballer in recent years.
