The ancient city of Ibadan is set for history as plans peak for the coronation of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
The official installation will take place on Friday, September 26, at the iconic Mapo Hall, with a week-long programme of activities starting on Monday.
The Oyo State Government has announced the deployment of over 2,000 security operatives to guarantee a peaceful and well-coordinated event, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Ademola Ojo, disclosed this during a press briefing held on Saturday at the Olubadan Palace, Ibadan.
He explained that personnel from the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Department of State Services, Amotekun Corps, and the Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority will be stationed across key areas of the city.
“Their commitment to maintaining order is paramount,” the commissioner said, assuring residents of a safe and seamless coronation period.
Describing the significance of the occasion, Ojo noted that the coronation of Oba Ladoja, a former governor and respected elder statesman, represents more than tradition.
“This coronation is not merely a traditional rite; it is a monumental celebration of Ibadan’s enduring spirit, the richness of our heritage, and the essential leadership that will guide our community into a promising future,” he said.

A week-long programme of events has been lined up by the government in partnership with the Olubadan-in-Council and other key stakeholders.
Activities include an interdenominational service at the Olubadan Palace on Monday, September 22; a Cultural Day on Tuesday, September 23; a coronation lecture by renowned historian Prof. Toyin Falola; a Mega Praise worship concert on Thursday, September 25; and the grand coronation ceremony on Friday at Mapo Hall.
The commissioner confirmed that the ceremony will be attended by President Bola Tinubu, senior government officials, traditional rulers from across Yorubaland and beyond, members of the diplomatic corps, captains of industry, and a wide array of guests from within and outside Ibadanland.
He also commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his strong support, saying the timely release of funds and consistent backing have been instrumental in organising the coronation.
Oba Ladoja, who was born on September 25, 1944, and studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Liège in Belgium, rose through the Ibadan chieftaincy hierarchy as Otun Olubadan, making him next in line under the city’s unique rotational succession system.
His enthronement follows the passing of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan, on July 7.
His ascension is widely regarded as a cultural and historical milestone, marking a new chapter in Ibadan’s unity, heritage, and leadership.
