Nigeria and China have restated their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations as both nations jointly celebrated Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary and China’s 76th National Day in Lagos.
The colourful event, which also coincided with the Mid-Autumn Festival, drew government officials, diplomats, business leaders, cultural groups, and students.
Speaking at the event, Chairman of the House Committee on Nigeria-China Relations, Hon. Jaafaru Yakubu, praised China’s Consul General in Lagos, Ms. Yan Yuqing, for her role in promoting closer ties between the two nations.
He described her as a true friend of Nigeria, citing her efforts in facilitating business partnerships, scholarships for Nigerian students, and cultural exchanges that have boosted people-to-people relationships.
Yakubu also commended Dr. Eric Ni, Chairman of the China Industrial and Commercial Enterprise Association, for fostering business collaborations that have created jobs, encouraged technology transfer, and supported community development projects.
He emphasized that Chinese companies operating in Nigeria have gone beyond infrastructure investments to prioritize local content and sustainable development practices.
Looking to the future, Yakubu urged both countries to expand cooperation in renewable energy, digital technology, healthcare, and agriculture. He also called on China to broaden educational opportunities for Nigerian and Chinese students to strengthen academic and professional exchanges.

Representing the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Simon Omo-Ezomo noted that Nigeria’s partnership with China aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises industrialisation, economic diversification, and job creation.
According to him, these shared priorities provide a strong foundation for mutual economic growth and prosperity.
In his remarks, Dr. Ni encouraged members of the Chinese community in Nigeria to continue contributing positively to the nation’s development, describing the event as a reflection of the enduring bonds between the two countries.
“This unique convergence represents the harmony between China and Nigeria, two nations with rich histories, bright futures, and growing friendship,” he said.
The celebration featured lively cultural performances that showcased the traditions of both nations. Groups such as the Hauxing Arts Troupe, the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, and Overseas Chinese performers entertained guests with dance, music, and drama. The display underscored the cultural richness that underpins Nigeria-China relations.
As Nigeria and China look ahead, the event reaffirmed a mutual vision for deeper cooperation across trade, culture, technology, and education—pillars that continue to strengthen ties between Africa’s largest economy and the world’s second-largest.
