Manchester United stunned Liverpool 2–1 in a dramatic Premier League clash on Sunday, ending their nine-year winless run at Anfield.
It halted the reigning champions’ title momentum.
The match, filled with high intensity and missed chances, saw United’s captain, Harry Maguire, rise above Ibrahima Konate to head home the winner in the 84th minute — a goal that sent the away supporters into wild celebration.
United had taken a shocking early lead just one minute into the game when Bryan Mbeumo capitalised on Amad Diallo’s brilliant run and flick to finish clinically inside the box.
The goal drew protests from Liverpool fans, who felt play should have been stopped as Alexis Mac Allister was down holding his head after colliding with Virgil van Dijk.
Liverpool pushed relentlessly for an equaliser, with Cody Gakpo proving dangerous throughout the match.
The Dutch forward hit the post twice in the first half and once shortly after the break before finally finding the net in the 78th minute. He tapped in Federico Chiesa’s low cross to bring the Reds level, igniting hopes of a comeback.

But those hopes were dashed six minutes later when Bruno Fernandes delivered a perfectly weighted cross from a free kick, and Maguire powered home a header to restore United’s lead.
“It means everything,” Maguire told Sky Sports. “They’ve had the better of us over the last few years, and it’s not been good for our club. We haven’t given our fans enough days like today. It’s been a long time coming, coming to this ground and picking up three points.”
Liverpool had several chances to turn the tide. Mohamed Salah wasted a golden opportunity in the second half when he fired wide from close range, his frustration clear. Gakpo also missed a sitter late in the game, heading the ball wide from just a few yards out.
Captain Virgil van Dijk admitted disappointment after the loss. “We conceded a very sloppy second goal. We worked so hard to get back into the game and created great opportunities, but if you concede like that, it’s disappointing,” he said. “We need to stay humble and keep working. It’s a long season.”
The defeat marked Liverpool’s fourth consecutive loss across all competitions — their worst run since November 2014 — leaving them fourth in the table on 15 points, four behind leaders Arsenal.
United’s victory marked their second consecutive league win under manager Ruben Amorim, who took charge last November. The result lifted the Red Devils to ninth place with 13 points and renewed belief in their campaign.
