Super Eagles coach, Eric Chelle, has reportedly intensified his search for a new goalkeeper following recent behavioural and performance concerns surrounding current number one, Stanley Nwabali.
According to SCORENigeria, Chelle is no longer fully confident in the Chippa United shot-stopper’s temperament and consistency, especially after a series of heated exchanges with teammates during Nigeria’s last 2026 World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic in Uyo.
Sources close to the Super Eagles camp revealed that Chelle has begun exploring potential replacements capable of offering more stability and professionalism between the posts. “Eric is certainly looking for a replacement for Nwabali,” one source said.
“Many have suggested Maduka Okoye, but he doesn’t think he is good enough. He had also placed high hopes on Noah Atubolu of Freiburg, but the young goalkeeper was recently called up by Germany.”
The source added that Nwabali’s recent attitude has raised concerns among the coaching staff, describing his temperament as “unsettled.” “It seems a bit of success has gone to his head, and the only way to manage the situation is to introduce strong competition for his position,” the insider noted.
Nwabali became Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON in Ivory Coast, where he delivered standout performances that helped the Super Eagles reach the final.

His composure and agility during penalty shootouts earned him national acclaim and a hero’s status.
However, since that impressive AFCON run, Nwabali’s form has appeared inconsistent, with observers pointing to lapses in concentration and occasional outbursts on the field.
His clashes with senior players such as Wilfred Ndidi and Calvin Bassey in recent games have further amplified concerns about his discipline.
Chelle, who took over managerial duties earlier this year, is said to prioritise a calm and focused defensive unit ahead of the next stage of the World Cup qualifying campaign.
The search for an alternative goalkeeper underscores the Super Eagles’ commitment to strengthening their squad and maintaining internal harmony.
While no official decision has been made, insiders suggest the technical crew may soon invite new goalkeepers for assessment before Nigeria’s next international window.
Fans are now watching closely to see whether Nwabali can reclaim the trust of his coach — or if a new era between the posts is about to begin.
