The Lagos State Police has detained Afrobeats singer, Seun Kuti over alleged assault on a police officer over the weekend.
The spokesperson, Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin issued a confirmation via his official Twitter handle on Monday.
A statement by the Police reads: “Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, in the early hours of today turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, in company of his lawyer and family representative. He has been placed under arrest.”
Credible News reports that the Inspector-General of Police ordered Seun’s arrest over an assault on a policeman on the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos, last Saturday.
The social media had reported that policemen stormed the Afrobeat musician’s Lagos apartment and the African shrine, in Ikeja area of Lagos to arrest him.
It was gathered that police operatives were at Seun’s place on Saturday night and Sunday morning, but did not meet him.
This morning social media posts indicated that the musician reported to the Police was promptly handcuffed and detained.
On Sunday, the Police Service Commission condemned the assault on a Police Officer in uniform and on official duty in Lagos by Seun.
The commission applauded the Inspector General of Police, Baba Usman Alkali for his prompt action in ordering the arrest and prosecution of Seun.
“Lagos Police Command appreciates the public for their concern and assures that the ongoing investigation will be detailed, transparent, professionally pursued; and justice will be manifestly served for all parties involved,” the State Command said.
