Emergency responders have rescued 37 persons from the rubble of a building on Lagos Street, Garki, Abuja, which collapsed amidst heavy downpour on Wednesday night.

Eye witnesses at the scene feared many were killed and when the multi-purpose building caved in trapping occupants.

The building reportedly came down on the occupants during the heavy rain which began around 10:30pm on Wednesday.

”There was wailing all over the place after the building collapsed. Dozens of people are either dead or trapped as the building is fully occupied.

“It was a scene of helplessness with people screaming and running helter-skelter, while the heavy rain continued,” an unidentified witness said.

Lagos Street in Garki is one of the popular area with night life. The street, dotted eateries and bars, is busy all through the night –and day time
