The House Committee on Justice, Youth, and Legislative Compliance sent Naira Marley an invitation on Thursday.
The House of Representatives has called Nigerian singer Azeez Fashola, better known by his stage name Naira Marley.
The late singer Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Aloba, was signed to Marlian Music, a record label founded by Naira Marley. The House of Representatives called Marley due to disagreements regarding Mohbad’s royalties.
The House Committee on Justice, Youth, and Legislative Compliance sent Naira Marley an invitation on Thursday.
The lawmakers invited Mohbad’s manager, Jiggy Adeoye, to testify on October 31 in an effort to obtain the musical rights to Mohbad’s works.
The letter which officially summoned Naira Marley and Mohbad’s legal team to a meeting reads, “The House Committees on Justice, Youth and Legislative Compliance invite you and the legal team of MOHBAD for an interactive meeting session as regards a referral received being a resolution of the House of Representatives during their plenary session on Tuesday 26th September 2023 with respect to the circumstances surrounding the royalties and other benefits of Mohbad and to ascertain the level of your interaction with other relevant copyright organisations; such information will guide the committee on further legislative action.
“In view of the above, you are kindly invited for an interactive session with the chairman, Committee on Justice, Youth and legislative compliance scheduled as follows.”
On September 12, 2023, Mohbad, a 27-year-old former signee of Marlian Records, passed away under mysterious circumstances. An inquest conducted by a coroner into the singer’s death was ordered by the Lagos State Government.
It was learned that the House resolution came about as a result of a motion made on Thursday by the lawmaker Babajimi Benson, who represents the Ikorodu Federal Constituency in Lagos State.
