The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero was today rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Owerri with his right eye completely shut.

The NLC Head of Information and Publicity, Comrade Benson Upah, described what happened to Ajaero as an act of abduction that degenerated into attempted murder.

He said: “Contact has been made with Comrade Ajaero this evening around 15:30 hours at the Federal Medical Centre and currently receiving medical attention.

“Thoroughly brutalized, his right eye at the time of contact was completely shut.

“Ajaero stated that shortly after his arrest, he was subjected to further abuse, occasionally with bottles, while being blindfolded and beaten.

“They took his phones, cash, and other personal belongings and haven’t given them back to him.”

Prior to this, Credible News revealed that Comrade Ajaero was detained by the police in Imo State while organizing a demonstration by workers.

According to Ajaero, the protest was necessary since the State government had not carried out earlier agreements.

He claimed that the government has broken agreements on several occasions, most notably the agreement that the government and organized labor reached on January 9, 2021.

“On outstanding salary arrears, shockingly, some workers have been subjected to a staggering 20 months of unpaid salaries under the unfounded label of ‘ghost workers’.

“Unjust declaration of workers as ghost workers, Approximately 11,000 hardworking individuals have been unjustly branded as ghost workers, their salaries diverted even while they diligently carried out their duties”, he said.
