Four officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, have been reportedly killed following an ambush by gunmen suspected to be sea pirates, in Bakana community in Rivers.
The officers were shot and killed by sea pirates on the Bakana River in Degema Local Government Area, according to a community member who spoke to reporters on Saturday under the condition of anonymity.
Although the specifics and circumstances of the encounter between the NSCDC agents and the sea pirates remain unknown at this time, users of Rivers State’s waterways have reported an increase in the frequency of deadly pirate attacks.
Passengers were reported to be regularly abducted by the armed pirates and held for ransom.
Along the waterways, they also stole merchandise, wares, and boat engines from their owners.
The four NSCDC officers who were shot and killed by the gunmen are still unidentified.
However, images and videos purportedly circulating throughout the state show the dead Civil Defense Corps officers inside a speedboat that is anchored by a river
“Two of the victims who are Muslims have already been buried according to Islamic rites”, the eyewitness added.
Reacting, the Spokesman of NSCDC in Rivers, DSC Olufemi Ayodele did not admit or deny the incident,
He said that the command would issue a statement as more facts unfold.
