The Akwa Ibom State Government has permanently closed down the Chinese firm Golden Tripod Company due to environmental pollution.
The state had previously ordered the relocation of the manufacturing company from the city center to a suburb along Ikot Ekpene road, Uyo, in August due to environmental concerns.
Governor Pastor Umo Eno expressed displeasure at the company’s illegal reopening despite the directive and ordered its permanent closure.
Speaking at the State Executive Council meeting on Thursday in Uyo, Eno revealed that the company, which is accused of engaging in activities that endanger the environment and public health, would stay closed until alternate space at the Itam industrial estate is set aside for it and other businesses.
“The illegal reopening of Golden Tripod Company, a Chinese company accused of conducting environmentally harmful and human health-hazardous operations, is something that EXCO finds objectionable.” It was decided to keep the facility closed indefinitely until they were given access to alternate property at the Itam industrial estate, he stated.
The government emphasized that the facility would remain shut until an alternative land is allocated to the company at the industrial estate in Itam, along with other firms.
