A husband and wife, Mr. Ikechukwu Okafor and Ifeyinwa Okafor, have been sentenced to two years imprisonment for unlawfully dealing in 19.12 kilograms of Methamphetamine, a prohibited drug.
The couple, who reside in Lagos, pleaded guilty to the offence, and the conviction was handed down by Justice Nicholas Oweibo in the Federal High Court in Lagos. They were arraigned on five counts of conspiracy, unlawful dealing, and unlawful possession of the banned drug by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency , NDLEA.
The crimes were committed at their residence on October 5, 2023, and the offences contravened sections of the NDLEA Act.
He informed the court that the offenses were against the NDLEA Act Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, sections 14, 19, and 11(c).
The prosecutor urged the court to sentence the couple in accordance with the sections of the NDLEA Act they were charged with after the couple entered a guilty plea.
Benson Ndakara, their attorney, begged the judge to be kind to his clients and to balance justice and mercy when imposing their sentences.
Citing numerous authorities, Ndakara informed the court that his clients were first-time offenders without prior conviction histories.
Thus, he implored the court to grant his clients a fine or a non-custodian sentence.
As a result, Judge Oweibo gave the couple a 24-month sentence in his ruling.
