The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress ,NLC, Joe Ajaero, has provided an account of his ordeal in Imo state where he was allegedly beaten by thugs.
According to Ajaero, he was arrested by the police in Owerri, the capital of Imo state, and then handed over to a group of seven thugs who physically assaulted him.
During a press conference in Abuja on Friday, November 10, Ajaero explained that the NLC had written to all security agencies before organizing the protest in the state.
He reported that workers who had arrived at the protest venue around 7 am were attacked by thugs who seized their phones.
Ajaero arrived at the location around 9 am after receiving reports of the assault on workers.
Ajaero claimed that the police arrested him and subsequently handed him over to the thugs.
He expressed shock and distress over the beating he received, describing how his hands were tied, and he was dragged on the floor “like a common criminal.”
Additionally, Ajaero emphasized that he is not a card-carrying member of any political party, refuting allegations to the contrary.
The incident highlights the challenges and sometimes violent confrontations that can arise during protests, even when they are organized by groups advocating for workers’ rights.
