Tragedy struck the Nigeria Immigration Service , NIS,  as eight band personnel lost their lives in a fatal accident on the Kano/Zaria road.

The unfortunate incident occurred as an 18-passenger bus, carrying the band members, was returning from Kano after their performance at the Presidential Commissioning and Passing–Out-Parade of the 48th Superintendent Basic Course 2023 at the Immigration Training School.

The event, attended by high-ranking officials, including the Acting Comptroller-General of Immigration Service, Mrs. Wuraola Adepoju, turned into a somber moment as news of the fatal accident spread.

A video seeking confirmation of the incident was briefly posted on the NIS Media platform in Abuja but was subsequently deleted.

In response to inquiries, the NIS Public Relations Officer, Dr. Dotun Aridegbe, expressed the organization’s deep sorrow, stating, “we are in a very pensive mood right now.”

The loss of these band personnel is a poignant moment for the Nigeria Immigration Service, and the entire organization mourns the untimely demise of its dedicated members who had just participated in a significant official event.

In Nigeria, border security and migration management are the purview of the Nigeria Immigration Service ,NIS, a governmental agency.

It was created in 1963 by a parliamentary act.

The Immigration Act of 2015 replaced the 1963 Act, which was repealed in 2015 and gave the service the legal means to combat the smuggling of migrants , SOM,  into Nigeria.
