In a heart-wrenching incident that unfolded on Monday, November 13, 2023, two officials of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority ,LAWMA, lost their lives in the line of duty.

The aftermath of this tragedy casts a somber shadow on the city, leaving a community grappling with grief and a poignant reminder of the risks faced by those who dedicate themselves to public service.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the devastating accident in a statement on Tuesday. The incident occurred along the Gbagada Expressway, where a Honda Saloon car, bearing the number plate EPE 984 DV, plowed into the LAWMA officials diligently discharging their duties.

In the immediate aftermath, the driver of the vehicle fled the scene, abandoning the car. However, the wheels of justice turned swiftly as the driver surrendered himself to the police on the same fateful night. SP Hundeyin disclosed that the driver would face charges of manslaughter, underscoring the gravity of the consequences tied to this tragic incident.

Details emerged suggesting that the driver was attempting to evade officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority , LASTMA, when the accident unfolded. The pursuit of escape took a fatal turn, leading to the loss of lives and irrevocable consequences for those left behind.

In response to the incident, the Ministry of Transportation swiftly addressed the public, refuting any involvement of LASTMA officials in the tragic accident. The statement emphasized a commitment to a thorough investigation, with a promise to unveil the outcomes to the public. Accountability looms large, and any individual found responsible will be held to answer for their actions in accordance with the law.

As the community mourns the loss of these dedicated LAWMA officials, questions linger about the broader implications of safety on our roads and the responsibilities that come with operating a vehicle. The pursuit of justice is now set in motion, with a city waiting for answers and a grieving community seeking solace in the wake of an unfathomable tragedy.
