The leaders welcomed continued discussions on these fronts and affirmed their commitment to strengthening dialogue and cooperation across various domains, including government talks on artificial intelligence (AI) and the establishment of a working group on counternarcotics cooperation.
A notable aspect of their agreement involved the resumption of high-level military-to-military communication, along with discussions on defense policy coordination and military maritime consultative agreement meetings. Additionally, they pledged to work toward a significant increase in scheduled passenger flights in early 2024, fostering a broader exchange encompassing education, culture, sports, and business.
The joint commitment to tackle the climate crisis in the critical decade ahead marked a significant stride, with positive discussions on national actions to reduce emissions and approaches toward a successful COP28. Xi reiterated the sensitivity of Taiwan as the most important issue in China-U.S. relations, urging the U.S. to honor its commitment of not supporting “Taiwan independence” and cease arming Taiwan. He urged the U.S. to lift unilateral sanctions against China, facilitating an equal, fair, and non-discriminatory environment for Chinese businesses.
