In a grand ceremony set to herald the 2023/2024 legal year, Chief Justice of Nigeria ,CJN, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola is poised to administer the oath of office to 58 distinguished legal minds elevated to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocates of Nigeria ,SAN,.
The ceremony is scheduled for Monday, November 27, 2023, and is a pivotal part of the events lined up to formally commence the new legal year of the court.
The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee ,LPPC, received a robust 114 applications for the esteemed rank, subjecting them to a rigorous screening process.
After thorough evaluations at various stages, including the Advocates 1st and 2nd Filtration Stages, Academic Pre-qualification, Academic 2nd Filtration Exercise, Independent Appeals Hearing, and Chambers Inspection Exercises, the committee pruned the number down to 69.
Ultimately, the LPPC conferred the title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria on 58 successful candidates, encompassing 57 advocates and one academic.
Notable among the newly appointed Senior Advocates are human rights activists such as Olukayode Ajulo, Felix Offia, Lawrence Falade, Kingsley Obamogie, Folasade Alli, Abiola Isiaq Oyebanji, Bomo Agbebi, Daniel Uruakpa, and Oseloka Osuigwe, among others.
*The swearing-in ceremony will take place at the main Courtroom of the Supreme Court, as announced by Dr. Festus Akande, the Supreme Court’s Director of Information. Additionally, the special court session will feature speeches from key figures, including the CJN, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, and other prominent stakeholders.
During this session, the CJN is expected to deliver a state-of-the-Judiciary address, offering insights into the performance of the Supreme Court and the Nigerian Judiciary during the 2022/2023 legal year.
As the Supreme Court formally kicks off the new legal year, the ceremony promises to be a momentous occasion, showcasing the commitment of the legal fraternity to upholding justice and the rule of law in the country.
