Global superstar Shakira has reached a settlement in her tax fraud case, putting an end to what promised to be a high-profile trial.

The Colombian singer arrived at a Barcelona courthouse for the trial, where she faced allegations of defrauding the Spanish state of £12.5 million on income earned between 2012 and 2014.

Wearing a stylish pink suit and sunglasses, the 46-year-old music icon greeted onlookers with a blown kiss as she made her way into the courthouse. However, the day took a swift turn as Shakira reached an agreement with prosecutors to settle the case, sparing herself a drawn-out legal battle.

As part of the deal, Shakira will be fined £6.4 million for the six tax fraud crimes she confessed to, a considerably lower amount than the prosecutors initially sought. The singer had already repaid the owed taxes, totaling nearly £15 million with interest. Additionally, she will pay a fine of £378,000 to avoid imprisonment.

In a statement made during the court proceedings, Shakira maintained her innocence but expressed her decision to accept the settlement to “spare my children seeing their mother sacrifice her well-being.”

She criticized the Spanish authorities for pursuing the case, highlighting the toll such legal battles take on individuals’ energy, time, and tranquility over extended periods.

The resolution of this tax fraud case allows Shakira to put the legal drama behind her and focus on her music career and personal life. The settlement, while a financial hit, ensures that the global icon can continue to inspire fans worldwide without the lingering cloud of a protracted trial.
