In a welcomed development, Russia expressed its approval of the ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Hamas in the Israel-Palestinian conflict.
The ceasefire, agreed upon for a minimum of four days, aims to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza and the release of over 50 hostages held by militants. In return, at least 150 Palestinians currently detained in Israel are expected to be released.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov addressed reporters, describing the ceasefire as the “first good news from Gaza in a long time.” He emphasized that Russia, along with many other countries, had been advocating for a truce and humanitarian pauses.
Peskov underscored that these pauses are crucial as they provide the foundation for future attempts at a sustainable settlement.
Russia’s involvement and interest in the Israel-Palestinian conflict stem from its longstanding ties with key players in the Middle East, including Israel, Hamas, and Iran. Throughout the conflict, President Vladimir Putin has consistently highlighted the plight of Palestinian citizens, labeling the crisis as a failure of U.S. policy.
He has urged Israel to exercise restraint in its actions. Notably, Russia’s hosting of a Hamas delegation in Moscow last month raised eyebrows in Israel.
The ceasefire agreement represents a diplomatic step forward and offers a glimmer of hope for a region marred by longstanding tensions and violence. As the world watches these developments, the focus now shifts to how the ceasefire and humanitarian efforts will pave the way for a more lasting and sustainable resolution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict.
