Amidst the months-long crisis between factions loyal to Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, and his Deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the Presidency has clarified that Akeredolu remains the governor of the state.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, issued a statement on Saturday emphasizing Akeredolu’s continued status as the governor.
The clarification follows reports suggesting that President Bola Tinubu may have directed state lawmakers to invoke the doctrine of necessity and declare Aiyedatiwa as the acting governor. However, the statement from the Presidency reaffirms Akeredolu’s position and role as the governor of Ondo State.
Earlier reports indicated that a resolution was reached after hours of deliberations between the President, state officials, and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday night.
The statement aims to put to rest any uncertainties or speculations regarding the leadership in Ondo State, emphasizing the stability and continuity of Akeredolu’s governorship.
“In his bid to restore political stability in Ondo State, President Bola Tinubu waded into the months-long crisis between factions loyal to the Executive Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, and the Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, late on Friday.”
“This followed marathon negotiations between the President and the Deputy Governor, representatives of Governor Akeredolu, federal and state lawmakers of Ondo, officials of the state’s chapter of the All Progressives Congress, and other stakeholders in the state at the State House, Abuja.”The President encouraged all opposing parties to bury the hatchet and embrace peace, eliciting pledges to that effect.
“This means that Governor Akeredolu remains the State’s Chief Executive, Aiyedatiwa remains Deputy Governor, and members of the State Executive Council continue in their respective roles.”
