The President of the Nigeria Referees Association, Sanni Zubair has reiterated the association’s stance to address poor officiating in the country’s domestic leagues.
Zubair’s statement comes in the wake of heightened complaints and suspensions of referees in the ongoing 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League season.
The football community has witnessed an increasing number of disputes over referees’ decisions, prompting the Nigeria Football Federation to suspend 14 referees on November 6.
The suspended referees were held accountable for poor officiating in various matches, reflecting a broader concern about the impact of officiating on the integrity and quality of football competitions.
Zubair emphasized the association’s determination to weed out referees performing below par, asserting that measures are in place to act as deterrents. Regardless of any potential external influence, the association intends to enforce the full weight of the law against referees found to have deliberately erred.
The recent disciplinary actions against match officials illustrate the association’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the game and instilling confidence in players and fans regarding the fairness of officiating.
The pledge to flush out subpar referees aligns with the broader goal of elevating the standard of football officiating in Nigeria and fostering a positive and credible football environment.
As controversies over referees’ decisions persist, the Nigeria Referees Association’s stance signals a proactive approach to address issues and enhance the overall quality and credibility of football competitions in the country.
