In anticipation of the Edo State 2024 governorship election, Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu has formally declared his intention to vie for the Peoples Democratic Party ,PDP, ticket in the upcoming party primaries.
The announcement was made during a televised statement on Monday morning, capturing the attention of eager viewers across the state.
Philip Shaibu, a product of strong Christian values rooted in his upbringing, brings a wealth of experience and education to his political journey. Born in Kaduna to the late Pastor Francis Osikpomobo Shaibu and Lucy Momoh, he navigated his early education in Kaduna before earning a Bachelor of Science degree (Honours) in Accounting from the University of Jos in 2000.
His academic prowess was further highlighted during his tenure as the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students from 2000 to 2001.
Building on his academic achievements, Shaibu pursued a Master of Business Administration from the University of Benin in 2015, adding another layer to his credentials.
With his formal declaration, Shaibu gears up to participate in the PDP’s gubernatorial primaries, igniting a potential political showdown with the current Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki.
However, Obaseki is believed to be rooting fora Lagos-based lawyer, Asue Ighodalo, who hails from Edo Central, as successor.
The unfolding narrative promises a riveting electoral process that will shape the political landscape of Edo State.

The venue of Shaibu’s declaration, the Biohop Kelly Centre in Benin City, added a layer of intrigue to the unfolding drama. Initially scheduled for Eterno Hotel, the last-minute change of venue, attributed to a conflicting program by Governor Obaseki, added an unexpected twist to the political narrative.
As the deputy governor emphasized his connection to the people, citing his firsthand experience of their challenges, he proclaimed an unstoppable momentum in the forthcoming 2024 election.
Shaibu underscored his pivotal role in laying the foundation for Edo State’s development alongside Governor Obaseki over the past seven years.
Notably, Shaibu’s declaration coincided with the fourth meeting of the ‘Finish Well Group,’ a key structure within the Edo PDP.
The political chess game reached a symbolic point as Shaibu’s supporters gathered at Eterno Hotel, intersecting with Obaseki’s supporters, creating an atmosphere charged with anticipation.
Despite tensions between Shaibu and Obaseki, fueled by the governor’s preference for a different successor, the deputy governor remains undeterred in his pursuit of the governorship.
The political landscape of Edo State is set for a compelling narrative as the deputy governor calls on the people to rally behind his vision for the state’s future.
With this declaration, Shaibu aims to participate in the PDP’s gubernatorial primaries, setting the stage for a potentially competitive and dynamic electoral process in Edo State.
