Bright Okpocha, widely known as Basketmouth, a veteran comedian born in Lagos and hailing from Abia State, Nigeria, has declared his intention to quit comedy in the next five years.
The 45-year-old comedian shared this revelation during an interview on Arise TV, outlining his plan to retire from comedy at the age of 50 and venture into building his entertainment empire.
Basketmouth, who initially explored drumming and later rap in the 1990s, has been a prominent figure in the Nigerian comedy scene. Despite giving up a music career for comedy, he always harbored the intention to return to the broader spectrum of entertainment.
In an unexpected move, Crediblenews had reported , Basketmouth recently extended an invitation to his long-time rival and colleague, AY Makun, at his concert held at Eko Hotel & Suites.
This reconciliatory gesture followed Basketmouth’s public apology to AY, burying a 17-year-old feud. However, Basketmouth clarified that AY was not scheduled to perform at the event due to its scripted nature.
In the Arise TV interview, Basketmouth explained his future plans, stating, “In five years, I will be 50 years old. I would have moved on to something else that would take up a lot of my time.
I wish to put my all into it.” He expressed confidence in managing multiple interests, including films, TV shows, concerts, and comedy, but acknowledged the difficulty of giving comedy his best while juggling other pursuits.
The move to retire after a series of yearly comedy shows for the next five years signifies a strategic shift in Basketmouth’s career trajectory. This decision aligns with his desire to explore various aspects of the entertainment industry and establish his own empire.
Basketmouth’s openness about his future plans reflects the evolving landscape of collaboration and professionalism within the entertainment industry. The recent reconciliation with AY showcases a mature approach to personal relationships, emphasizing the potential for growth and collaboration beyond longstanding feuds.
As Basketmouth prepares for this significant transition, the entertainment industry eagerly awaits the next phase of his career and the impact it will have on the Nigerian creative landscape.
