The Federal Government has officially taken possession of the Second Niger Bridge from the construction company, Julius Berger, seven months after its inauguration by the previous administration.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, expressed satisfaction with the completed work during an inspection, commending both past and present administrations for their contributions to the project.
Umahi highlighted plans to address the lighting issue on the bridge, announcing the deployment of solar solutions to ensure consistent illumination at night without relying on diesel. He also emphasized the commitment to completing the two interchanges to improve traffic flow around Asaba and Onitsha.
In addition, Umahi revealed plans for further development around the bridge, including service stations, filling stations, restaurants, supermarkets, and other amenities. The minister underscored President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to the project, ensuring its success.
To enhance security on the bridge, the minister announced the installation of Closed-circuit Television ,CCTV, cameras and the deployment of security personnel. The move aims to safeguard the infrastructure and maintain a safe environment for users.
Managing Director of Julius Berger, Dr Lars Richter, described the handover as a technical transfer following the project’s inauguration. Richter emphasized the successful and timely completion of the work, highlighting Julius Berger’s commitment to delivering the highest quality.
Director of Bridge Design and Construction ,South, at the Federal Ministry of Works, Mr Bede Obioha, urged residents to assist in securing the installed facilities. He commended the ministry’s staff and contractors for their excellent work and called on road users to adhere to traffic rules for everyone’s safety.
