The President of the African Export-Import Bank ,Afreximbank, Prof. Benedict Oramah, has been awarded the FORBES AFRICA 2023 Person of The Year in a ceremony held in Cairo.
The award recognizes Prof. Oramah’s outstanding contributions to the development of Africa and his leadership at Afreximbank.
The award ceremony included the unveiling of the cover for FORBES AFRICA’s December 2023/January 2024 edition featuring Prof. Oramah as the cover personality. The magazine highlighted his three-decade career at Afreximbank and his role as a true pan-Africanist.

Renuka Methil, Managing Editor of FORBES AFRICA, emphasized Prof. Oramah’s visionary leadership, citing initiatives like the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System ,PAPSS, a historic project for cross-border payments in local African currencies. The award recognizes Prof. Oramah as a resilient risk-taker and a leader contributing to the economic development of Africa.
Nominations for the FORBES AFRICA Person of The Year are reviewed by the magazine’s editorial and research teams, including journalists from its bureaus across Africa. Prof. Oramah was unanimously selected as the winner for 2023.
This recognition adds to Prof. Oramah’s list of honors, including the Zik Prize in Professional Leadership received on 18 November in Lagos, Nigeria. He has been acknowledged for his significant contributions to promoting trade and driving intra-African trade through various initiatives.
