The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, UNICAL, Professor Florence Obi, has directed that the payment of school fees by undergraduates of the institution be put on hold, until further notice.
A statement issued by the Registrar of the University, Gabriel Egbe, disclosed that the directive was coming on the heels of a protest embarked upon by students of the institution, over the recent adjustment in undergraduate school charges.
Egbe said the Management of the institution is a listening administration and has assured the students as critical stakeholders, that appropriate arrangements have been put in place through constructive engagement with the students, to resolve the matter.
The students who protested the hike in school charges earlier on Monday, amounting to over 100%, noted that the economy was already too tough for Nigerians to cope with, as the increment would mean that some students would have to drop out of school.
The management of the institution in an earlier statement issued over the weekend by its Public Relations Officer, Effiong Eyo, disclosed that the increment was necessitated by the economic realities, and the need to maintain the academic standards which the University is known for.
The statement further disclosed that the implementation of the hundred percent increment would take effect from the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions.
