27 Rivers state house of Assembly Lawmakers loyal to the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike have defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC this morning.
This is coming amidst the political crisis that has erupted within the state between camp of the former governor and the current governor, Sim Fubara. It’s not clear if the FCT Minister would also join the party.
Recall that in October, 24 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly had moved to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara in the state. The lawmakers, who were believed to be loyal to the immediate past Rivers State governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, had signed an impeachment notice against Fubara.
On Friday, Wike said that 27 of the 31 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who voted against Fubara were against him. Fubara and Wike had been locked in a bitter battle since late October, when some lawmakers attempted to impeach Fubara, leading to the bombing of an assembly complex.

Since then, the Rivers assembly has been divided into two camps – one led by Mr Wike, now the FCT Minister, and the other led by Mr Fubara, the former Speaker of the assembly.
The Wike-led faction is led by Martin Amaewuhle, while the Fubara-led faction is headed by Edison Ehie, the former leader of the Assembly who was ousted for not backing Mr Fubara’s impeachment.
On Tuesday, the two factions held a parallel sitting. The faction backing Mr Wike said it held a plenary session at the partially destroyed House of Assembly Complex. This led to the transfer of the Clerk of the Assembly and his representative by the state government.
