In a powerful demonstration of commitment to education and national healing, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu addressed the recently rescued Federal University Dutsin-Ma students on Sunday, December 17.
Senator Tinubu, through her pet-project, the Renewed Hope Initiative ,RHI, awarded N4 million in scholarship grants and distributed four brand new laptops to four of the five rescued students during their visit to the State House, Abuja.
With grace and empathy, Senator Tinubu welcomed the girls back to a nation that had fervently hoped for their safe return. Acknowledging the pain they endured during their 70 days in captivity, she expressed solidarity with the students, their parents, teachers, and all Nigerians who shared in the sorrow of their abduction on October 5, 2023.
The First Lady extended her gratitude to Almighty God for safeguarding the students and reuniting them with their families. She commended the relentless efforts of law enforcement officers from various agencies who worked tirelessly to secure the safe return of the abducted students.

In a statement issued by her spokesperson, Busola Kukoyi, Senator Tinubu assured the rescued girls of the unwavering commitment of both the Federal Government and the Renewed Hope Initiative to provide psychological and educational support. Emphasizing the importance of not allowing their traumatic experience to hinder their educational pursuits and career interests, she stated, “You must continue to pursue your educational interests. By ensuring that you continue to learn, as we provide you with the necessary medical and psychological support, we at the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) are also committed to providing you with guidance and support to reach your full potential.”

Senator Tinubu announced that each rescued girl would receive a scholarship grant of N1 million and a brand-new laptop from the Renewed Hope Initiative. In addition, the Federal Government pledged N2 million to the parents of each rescued girl and N1 million to the Vice Chancellor of the University.
Expressing gratitude for the safe return of the students, Senator Tinubu lauded the exemplary leadership of the Office of the National Security Adviser and the effective coordination of law enforcement agencies. Brigadier General Olutayo Adesuyi, the Representative of the National Security Adviser, highlighted the significance of the First Lady’s meeting with the rescued girls, symbolizing the Federal Government’s solidarity and support.
Present at the meeting were the parents of the rescued girls, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Dutsin-Ma Katsina, and representatives of the Inspector General of Police and National Counter Terrorism Legal Officer. As the rescued students embark on their journey to recovery, Senator Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative stands as a beacon of support, emphasizing the transformative power of education and empathy in the face of adversity.
