In a shocking turn of events, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has reportedly passed away at the age of 67.

Sources reveal that the governor succumbed to the battle against leukemia and prostate cancer, marking the end of a chapter in the state’s political landscape.

Governor Akeredolu’s health struggles have been a matter of public concern, especially after his return from a three-month medical leave in Germany on September 7. Following his return, the governor opted to operate remotely from Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, triggering a political crisis due to his initial reluctance to hand over power to Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

The situation escalated with allegations of the governor’s signature being forged by his loyalists in official matters. President Bola Tinubu intervened on November 24, putting an end to the impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Aiyedatiwa.

Despite this, on December 12, Governor Akeredolu announced another medical leave for further treatment, relinquishing power to Deputy Governor Aiyedatiwa.

Richard Olatunde, the chief press secretary to the governor, officially stated, “In the absence of Governor Akeredolu, the Deputy Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, will assume the responsibilities of the Governor in an acting capacity.”

The passing of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu leaves the state in mourning, reflecting on the political turbulence and health challenges that marked the final months of his tenure.

As Ondo State grapples with this loss, tributes pour in for a leader whose legacy will be remembered for both accomplishments and the challenges faced during a tumultuous period in the state’s history.
