Expectant mothers have been urged by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu to prioritize their health and get tested for HIV/AIDS.
According to her, doing this will help them maintain their own health and stop the disease from being passed from mother to child.
The First Lady was speaking at the National Hospital in Abuja when she welcomed the first child of 2024 in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, according to a statement released by her spokesperson, Busola Kukoyi.
She made a plea to well-meaning Nigerians, saying that the government cannot improve healthcare delivery in the nation on its own and that citizens must work together to adopt hospitals and wards.
“I implore nursing moms to give their infants the proper attention, make sure they receive their vaccinations on schedule, breastfeed exclusively, and give them enough wholesome weaning food to support healthy brain development.
“Pregnant women should prioritize their prenatal and postnatal care, practice good hygiene at home, space out their pregnancies, register their infants with the National Population Commission, NPC, and try to get their children enrolled in school at the appropriate age,” the expert counseled.
In order to guarantee the rights and protection of every child, the First Lady mentioned that her pet project, the Renewed Hope Initiative ,RHI, is collaborating with UNICEF to ensure that every birth in Nigeria is registered.
The Nation reports that , After visiting the baby boy, Boluwatife Johnson, the First Lady visited other babies just born in the hospital, bearing gifts and came across a set of conjoined twins.
After speaking with the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital, she stated the willingness of the Renewed Hope Initiative, RHI to lend a helping hand to facilitate the surgery to separate the twins.
The Chief Medical Director, Prof Mohammed Raji Mahmood, while expressing the appreciation of the hospital for the gesture, seized the opportunity to appeal for more help to sustain the legacy of the hospital.
Also with the First lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu was the wife of the Vice President, Hajia Nana Shettima, Minister of Women Affairs, Hon Uju Kennedy Ohaneye, wife of the minister for works, Mrs Umahi and the wife of the Minister of State for Defence, Mrs Bello Matawalle.
The baby Boluwatife Johnson was born at 12.03am.
