In a shocking incident on New Year’s Day, Safiyanu Isa Andaha, the chairman of Akwanga local government area in Nasarawa state was kidnapped along with his political godfather, Adamu Umar Custom.

The abduction took place in Bingo village, Akwanga, where the two politicians were traveling together without a driver and security personnel.

Gunmen emerged from the bushes, abducted both figures, and transported them to an unknown location. Special Adviser to the Nasarawa governor on local government and chieftaincy affairs, Haruna Kassimu, confirmed the incident, revealing that the abduction occurred around 8:30 pm.

Security agencies swiftly responded, chasing the kidnappers who forcefully fled with the council chairman. The police, in collaboration with other security agencies, are actively pursuing the perpetrators to secure the safe release of the kidnapped chairman and his political godfather.

The state police public relations officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, assured that the police commissioner, Umar Nadada, has mobilized personnel to pursue the hoodlums and ensure a successful rescue operation.

Speaking on the incident, Special Adviser to the governor on political matters, Kassim Mohammad Kassim, condemned the act, emphasizing that no religion allows youths to trade human beings for money. He urged security agencies to ensure the safe release of the council chairman.

While the motive behind the kidnapping remains unconfirmed, a close aide hinted at a possible political motive, linking it to the upcoming local government elections later in the year. The abducted chairman, Hon Safiyanu Isa Andaha, has been in office for over two years and is reportedly planning to seek another tenure in the August 2024 elections. The incident raises concerns about the security environment surrounding political activities in the region.
