In a startling incident, convicted offender Deobra Delone Redden launched a violent assault on Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus during a sentencing hearing in Las Vegas.

The assailant, denied bail by the judge, sprang from his position and attacked her on the bench, creating chaos in the courtroom.

A video capturing the incident showed the defendant’s sudden attack on the judge, prompting a courtroom marshal to intervene. However, the marshal suffered injuries, including a dislocated shoulder and a forehead cut, while attempting to restrain Redden.

The incident highlights the risks faced by judges and court staff during court proceedings, raising concerns about courtroom safety. The court praised the swift response of staff, law enforcement, and others who subdued the attacker.

Judge Holthus, along with the injured marshal, is currently under observation for injuries sustained during the assault. The court emphasized its commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all court proceedings.

Redden, already convicted and facing sentencing for aggravated battery with substantial bodily harm, now faces additional charges, including violence on a protected person. The attack occurred despite Redden having undergone a mental evaluation and being deemed fit to stand trial.

The shocking incident underscores the challenges faced by the justice system in maintaining the safety of courtrooms and the individuals within them. The court is reviewing its protocols to enhance security measures and protect the judiciary, the public, and court employees.

As the legal proceedings continue, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of robust security measures within court facilities, ensuring the safety of everyone involved in the administration of justice.
