The Supreme Court upholds election of Abba Yusuf as duly elected governor of Kano State.
In a significant turn of events, the Supreme Court has overturned the earlier verdict that deducted 165,616 votes from Governor Abba Yusuf’s count in the Kano governorship election. Justice John Okoro, who delivered the lead judgment, emphasized that the lower court erred in its decision.
The apex court set aside the verdicts of the Court of Appeal and election petitions tribunal, which nullified the victory of Yusuf in the March 18, 2023 governorship poll.

The legal dispute dates back to September 2023 when the Kano governorship election tribunal, comprising a five-member panel, nullified Governor Yusuf’s victory in the March 18 election.
The tribunal declared Nasiru Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress , APC, as the legitimate governor of Kano.
Subsequently, on November 13, the Court of Appeal upheld the tribunal’s decision, asserting that Abba Yusuf’s candidacy breached the Electoral Law, rendering him ineligible for the election.
Undeterred, Governor Yusuf pressed on, seeking justice at the highest legal echelon. The Supreme Court’s recent judgment marks a crucial victory for him, restoring the deducted votes and raising questions about the initial findings that led to the nullification of his election.
This legal saga underscores the complexity and intricacies involved in electoral disputes, where legal interpretations and judgments can significantly impact political landscapes. As the Supreme Court reinstates Abba Yusuf’s votes, it adds another chapter to the unfolding narrative of the Kano governorship election.
