An advocacy group, Joint Action for Good Governance, has on Friday urged the Federal Government to replicate the action of Lagos State by implementing a nationwide ban on Styrofoam.

The group, which made the call in Lagos via a letter to the Federal Government, said this was with a view to save/protect the environment.

Credible news reports that the letter was signed by the group’s National Vice President, Mr Abdulwaheed Odunuga and the General Secretary, Mr Adekunle Aderibigbe, respectively.

The duo while lauding the Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration for being proactive in banning the usage and distribution of styrofoam, urged the Federal Government to ensure a cohesive and effective approach in addressing the environmental challenges posed by the material.

“As members of the Joint Action for Good Governance, we would like to extend our commendation to the Lagos State government for taking this environmentally responsible initiative.

“The decision to ban Styrofoam aligns with global efforts to mitigate the adverse effects of non-biodegradable materials on the environment.

“Styrofoam, being a major contributor to pollution, poses significant threats to ecosystems, wildlife and public health.

“Lagos State’s proactive stance demonstrates a commitment to environmental sustainability and the well-being of its residents, and we strongly believe that this commendable action by Lagos State should serve as an inspiration for other states to follow”, they stated.

The duo also noted that the chain reaction of such a ban should go beyond the borders of Lagos State.

“A nationwide ban on styrofoam would not only protect our local environment but also contribute to regional and global efforts at reducing plastic pollution.

“Neighbouring States and countries share interconnected ecosystems, and a unified approach is crucial to achieving lasting positive effects”, they stated.

The duo further appreciated the continued media coverage of environmental issues and the positive actions taken by government bodies.

“It is our hope that media platforms will help amplify the call for a nationwide ban on styrofoam, fostering a more sustainable and eco-friendly future for our nation”, they added.

Recall that the Lagos State government had banned the usage and distribution of styrofoam and other single-use plastics in the state with immediate effect.

The state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who disclosed this on his official X page, formally twitter on Sunday, had reaffirmed that there was no going back on the ban.

Wahab stated that the ban will help curb the harmful effects of single-use plastics on the environment.
