The traditional ruler of Asaba, the Delta state capital, His Royal Majesty, Obi Joseph Chike Edozien, has reportedly passed on.

This July, he was to celebrate turning 100 years old.

On Wednesday, Edozien, the 13th Asagba of Asaba, went to be with his ancestors.

It was only lately that the Asagba of Asaba, who had ruled for thirty-three years, began celebrating his centennial.

Asaba residents described the monarch’s passing as a great loss to the entire Asaba kingdom as word of his passing began to circulate through the city’s streets on Wednesday. Multiple sources have confirmed the tragic news, even though the palace has not yet formally announced the passing of the esteemed monarch.

At the time of filing this report, efforts to get an official response from the Palace Secretary, Chief Patrick Ndili, were unsuccessful.

Edozien had in a message to mark the New Year and kick-start his centenary birthday celebration lamented the sorry state of things in the country.

He had said in part: “I am very happy to be here alive and healthy to celebrate my 100-year birthday.

“My New Year message to our leaders is that they need to fight corruption and review the constitution.

” I believe that Nigeria can be a very great nation. We need peace and development in Nigeria. And one of the major problems and setbacks in Nigeria is corruption. We need to fight corruption squarely.

“The economy is so bad, making people suffer. We have to fight poverty in Nigeria. At the time of independence, what we had was $2 to N1, but today, we have $1 to over a thousand naira. How can you survive in this economy?”
