Deborah Akinbiyi writes on why Nigeria must celebrate the Super Eagles
In the wake of the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, contest where the Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a commendable second place, it’s imperative to shift the narrative from despair to celebration.
While the ultimate victory eluded us, it’s crucial to recognize and applaud the remarkable journey our team undertook.
Consider this: with 24 formidable teams competing in the 2023 AFCON games, Nigeria emerged second- best in Africa. This achievement, though silver in material, shines brightly in the realm of sportsmanship and resilience.
Let us extend our gratitude and admiration to the valiant players who tirelessly fought for the nation’s pride. From the steadfast Victor Osimhen, whose striking prowess resonates on a global scale, to the indomitable William Troost-Ekong, hailed as the defensive linchpin and rightfully named AFCON Player of the Tournament, each player deserves our heartfelt appreciation.
Noteworthy is Stanley Nwabali, whose focus, agility and towering presence fortified our defense line. Ademola Lookman’s prolific goal-scoring prowess illuminated the quarterfinals, while Kelechi Iheanacho’s precision in netting goals remained unparalleled.
Let’s not forget the collective effort and unity displayed on the field—a testament to the power of teamwork and camaraderie. Regardless of individual differences, our players epitomized the essence of unity and resilience as poignantly recognised by President Bola Tinubu.
Amidst cynical pre-tournament reviews and palpable odds, the Super Eagles stood tall, representing the spirit of the nation with unwavering determination. Instead of succumbing to cyberbullying and criticism, let us shower our team with accolades and appreciation for their tireless efforts and unwavering commitment.
To Alex Iwobi, Samuel Chukwueze, Paul Onuachu, Ola Aina, Alhassan Yusuf and the entire team, Nigeria must show sincere gratitude. Behind every triumph lies countless hours of dedication, sacrifice and unwavering passion.
In conclusion, let us cease the trolls and embrace the essence of victory—be it silver, gold, or beyond. Nigeria’s Super Eagles may have come second, but in our hearts, they remain champions.
Congratulations, Nigeria, for a remarkable journey filled with resilience, unity and unwavering spirit.
